Kakamega Forest has been used by the local community for generations as a source of both timber and non-timber products. The existence of the forest is threatened by unsustainable utilization. The Kakamega Environmental Education Program (KEEP) works with local communities on conservation. There are limitations in protecting the forest’s biodiversity by security patrols alone. Environmental education is key. In 1995, a few of the forest guides began to share their knowledge of the forest with tourists and researchers as well as local school children.
