Makueni Council doubles its revenue collection

County Council of Makueni, one of the three champion Councils that took part in The ICT for local authorities sponsored by KIF and Innovation Africa Trust . has doubled its revenue base as a result of the SMS service.

The Council in partnership With Flametree Systems developed a 5 year  ICT Strategic Plan, Website with SMS service and an investor  promotional book for the Council. SMS service is linked to the LAIFOMS ( MIS for Kenyan local authorities) database that can be queried by SMS.  The system has proofed to be popular by the residents and investors with the popular service being the land rates application. One can get to know the rates on a particular land parcel by texting the plot number without having to travel to the Council offices. With the information on what is owed to the Council,  one wold make the next step of paying. Normaly this would have been in made in two trips to the Council, the first being to to enquire the balance and the second to make the payments.

According to the Council records, revenue has nearly doubled  compared to the same period last year. The Council has  now setup an information office at Kathonzweni, a Divisional Office with a computer that can access the Council data on LAIFOMS. Residents and business people would get any  information they desire without having to travel to the Council offices. The Council is now developing a GIS application that will help the Council in its planning and allocation of resources.
