Farmers Associations and ICT
Coffee and dairy farmers associations will have a go at ICT on 16th December 2009. On this day the new edition of CoopWorks will be launch at a big event at the Co-operative Bank of Kenya Training Centre in Nairobi. Partners include the Co-operative College of Kenya and the Kenya National Federation of Cooperatives (KNFC). The big question is: will farmer producers associations and co-operatives embrace computerization now? Are they ready to join the information society? The Kenyan government is pushing them: the new Strategic Plan for the Ministry of Cooperative Development and Marketing (2008-2012) highlights ICT as a way to modernize the co-ops. But will they be satisfied to be able to get reliable service from ICT firms, even as they are far from Nairobi? What experiences do you have with rural based farmer co-ops and ICT?

conservative management and steep learning curve
ICT in commodity based co-operatives has been hampered by a conservative culture and steep learning curve for computerization. The programme Computerization Support Services for Agricultural Co-operative Societies seeks to break this circle. A powerful group of organizations supports this programme: Co-operative Bank of Kenya http://www.co-opbank.co.ke, Co-operative College of Kenya http://www.cooperative.ac.ke, Kenya National Federation of Co-operatives http://www.knfc.co.ke, Kenya Coffee Producers Association http://www.kcpa.or.ke, International Labour Organization (UN) http://www.ilo.org/coopafrica and Flametree Systems Engineering http://www.flametree-systems.co.ke. All partners in the consortium have wide experience in supporting management and innovation in the co-operative movement. All partners have seen that a major effort in awareness and training is required to support over-due modernization. The new Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Co-operative Development and Marketing (http://www.cooperative.go.ke/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&g...) launched early this month recognizes ICT as a major factor for improving governance at the co-ops. The programme builds on the CoopWorks project (http://coopworks.co.ke): license-free management software for agricultural co-ops, under continuous development at Flametree Systems Engineering Ltd. New ICT training courses will be offered to rural co-ops from early next year onward. Regional trainings are planned from early 2010, with support by regional ICT service providers.
