Wote, 4th August 2011 – The County Council of Makueni has implemented a Geographic Information System (GIS) that covers all 7,200 sq kms of Makueni, with focus on education and water sources.
The new system was delivered on 4th August 2011 by Flametree. Council staff have been trained on operating and updating the system. The GIS is intended to help manage development budgets. The GIS maps show which areas are under performing in primary and secondary education. The maps further show how school facilities are distributed across the County. The GIS reveals under performance in relation to the number of pupils per classroom or per teacher. The GIS will be a powerful guide in LASDAP planning, as well as decision-making on other development funds. “A picture says more than a thousand words,” said GIS department head Viola Otieno of Flametree as she displayed the education maps at the launch showing how the devolved system of government can be supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The ICT programme of Makueni County is benefiting from support by the European Union.
